Don’t Let the Bedbugs Bite

His dream leaves him drenched in sweat when it breaks, eyes staring into the darkness and seeing nothing, heart pounding. It takes him a few long minutes to start calming down, and he tells himself he’s being a baby as he uses a corner of the sheet to wipe his face dry.

He always tells himself that, but to be honest, it doesn’t make him feel any better. There’s only one thing that does, really. Fortunately, that particular thing is less than two meters away, snoring in the bed next to his futon.

Senga snorts awake when Nikaido crawls into bed and worms his way under the blankets. “Nika?”

“Sorry,” Nikaido grunts, glad it’s dark so Senga can’t see his blush. He tries to settle in as close to the edge of the bed as possible. “Go back to sleep.”

“Shh, you know I don’t care.” Senga reaches to pull Nikaido closer, then lays a palm against his back more deliberately. “You’re sweatier than me! Ugh, you’re gonna get sick, come here already.”

Nikaido whines a little, embarrassed, but doesn’t stop Senga from fussing over him, from patting his skin dry with the sheet and resettling him close against Senga’s side. Senga’s own skin is warm from sleep, and it’s soothing against Nikaido’s clammy skin.

“You wanna talk about it?” Senga asks; Nikaido shakes his head. “It would help.”

“I don’t want to think about it,” Nikaido says. “It’s not the same dream every time anyway.”

It’s not really a lie, the details can vary quite a bit, but the feeling is what’s consistent about it. In the nightmares he’s alone, helpless, searching for something he knows is desperately important but can’t even remember what’s lost.

Plus sometimes there’s a monster that looks like a giant moth. Nikaido shudders and presses his cheek more tightly against Senga’s shoulder.

Senga sighs, but apparently decides to let it go, since all he says is, “Maybe you should just start out up here, then, okay? It’s not that I mind, it’s just that you end up with me every night anyway.”

“…Maybe.” Nikaido closes his eyes, willing himself to get sleepy again. “Don’t worry about it. Go back to sleep.”

“Let’s meet in our dreams,” Senga suggests. “Whatever it is, then I’ll be there too so it won’t be so scary.”

“Sure,” Nikaido agrees, knowing it won’t work like that really.

There’s several moments’ worth of peace before Senga says, “It’s a giant moth monster, isn’t it?”

Kenpi.”

“Okay, okay. Sweet dreams, Nika.”

And for some reason, when Senga wishes it, that’s when it’s most likely to come true.
