Limitless

[We’re waiting for you] the mail said, and Kawai rereading it for the 20th time didn’t change what it said.

“What absolute horseshit is this?” Kawai demanded, flopping back on the dressing room couch. Totsuka made sympathetic noises without looking up from his novel and Kawai switched from glaring at his phone to glaring at him. “You aren’t even listening!”

“I listened the first nineteen times you said that,” Totsuka said, turning a page. “What are you going to do, break up with him? Delete his contact info, that usually makes you feel better for thirty seconds or so.”

“Quit acting like you’re taking it any better!” Kawai snapped, feeling easily as out of temper with Totsuka as with Fujigaya at the moment. “What’s your propaganda line again? That it’s your summer haircut?”

“Having a go at me won’t make anything better, either.” Totsuka calm answers were just making Kawai all the more ready for a fight, and it wasn’t like Totsuka didn’t know that. “Keep it up and I’ll tell Ryosuke.”

“Oh, go put on a hat before you catch cold,” Kawai grumbled, folding his arms and wallowing even deeper into the couch, the very picture of sulk. Arguing with Totsuka never got him anywhere, so he settled for willing Totsuka to go jump in a lake with the power of his mind.

“What do you expect him to do anyway?” Totsuka asked, shutting his book and tossing it aside. “Apologize for his own debut?”

“I expect him not to send me retarded mails tormenting me with some half-baked hope that we can ever catch up to them,” Kawai said, re-directing his irritation back to Fujigaya and willing him to do some other stuff with the power of his mind as well.

Tongue-kiss a giraffe, he thought, squinting to concentrate better. On television!

The door opened and Yara stuck his head in, then stomped in the rest of the way.

“There you are!” he said, looming over them threateningly as only tiny senpai could. “Would you get your asses out there and pull your unit together? Tsuka-chan looks like he hasn’t slept in a week, Hashimoto is flitting from group to group like a paranoid hummingbird that’s off its medication, Gocchi has gone from delightfully creepy to just plain creepy, and you two are sulking in here like a bunch of girls on the rag!” Yara eyed Totsuka pointedly. “Not very attractive girls, either.”

“I’m telling Ryosuke on you,” Totsuka said, and Yara’s eyebrow twitched.

“Yara-senpaiii,” Kawai whined, “what’s even the point?” He waved his phone in the air. “What’s the point of anything when—”

“I dare you to complain about what you’re about to complain about, to me,” Yara interrupted, voice steely. “I dare you.” He paused, waiting. “No? Changed your mind?”

Kawai mumbled something indistinct and picked some lint off his track pants.

“Really, you two?” Yara sighed, sounding just exasperated. “Is this really all of A.B.C-Z’s strength? One debut and you fall to pieces? That’s your limit?”

“This debut, yeah, maybe it is,” Totsuka spoke up, and Kawai’s hands fell still, eyes glued to the floor. “Are we just supposed to keep running forever? What do you expect?”

“I expect you to apologize to each other at least, and mean it,” was Yara’s answer, unexpected enough to make Kawai drag his eyes up from his sneakers. “Like you love each other, which you do, in case you’ve forgotten.”

Totsuka’s expression said he didn’t get it, but Kawai did, a little. He turned to face Totsuka, properly, to meet his eyes.

“Sorry,” he told Totsuka, and meant it. “I know I’m taking it badly, and it’s not helping anything. I should have…thought of something, or worked harder, or, anything, I don’t know. Sorry.”

Totsuka nodded, serious. “Me too. And I’m sorry about the…you know.” Kawai reached over to palm Totsuka’s scalp, both of them scrunching their noses at the weirdness of the feeling.

“Finally,” Yara said, a note of approval creeping into his voice. “Now go out there and do the same thing to Tsuka-chan and Gocchi, and tell Hashimoto you love him, for fuck’s sake, before some other unit with more brains than wire tricks snatches him out from under your noses and does something properly sexy with him.”

Both of them got up and went, still not looking their best but at least in motion, Kawai murmuring a, “Thanks, Yara-senpai,” on the way past. Yara squeezed his shoulder briefly, and when they were through the door, pulled out his phone.

[Did the best I could,] it read. [You’d have done a better job, I think, Tono.]

[Stop that. And I don’t think I would have, for this particular thing, so thank you. And you know…we’re waiting for you ヘ(`▽´*) ]

“Idiot,” Yara said out loud, smiling just a little, and then typed it too. [Idiot. I’m going back to work.]
