Spider Job<\/b><\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t want to hurt him,\u201d Lea explained, distracted trying to keep the spider in the cup while trying to elbow open the glass sliding door to Roxas and Xion\u2019s tiny apartment porch. \u201cHe\u2019s just doing his job.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSpiders have jobs?\u201d Roxas asked, tilting his head as he reached past Lea to yank the door open. After only a few months of real life experience, both Roxas and Xion had learned to question anything Lea told them as true or him messing with them. Roxas glanced over his shoulder at Ventus, who was keeping a safe distance with the couch between him and the spider. <\/p>\n
Not that Ventus was any help, since he arguably had even less regular experience than anybody besides Namine. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t have bugs in the Land of Departure,\u201d Ventus said, expression wary. \u201cAre spiders the ones with lots of legs or the ones with way too many legs?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHis JOB,\u201d Lea interrupted, still trying to shake the stubborn spider out of the cup without flinging him back inside, \u201cis to eat other bugs we don\u2019t like at all, like fruit flies and mosquitoes! Which we\u2019d have a lot less of if you didn\u2019t keep leaving all the windows open.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u201cI like the outside,\u201d Roxas commented. He\u2019d spent most of his time in the Organization in the sterile Castle that Never Was, and DiZ sure hadn\u2019t bothered to code any unnecessary smells or sounds or bugs into the digital Twilight Town. He and Xion spent a lot of time in the dwindling days of summer sitting on the porch, marveling at all the sounds Twilight Town made. \u201cIt smells nice.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI mean, that\u2019s fair, but\u2026\u201d Lea looked down at the spider, no perched on the lip of the cup, giving him a baleful look. \u201cListen, buddy, don\u2019t make that face at me. I\u2019m not the one too dumb not to drop on unsuspecting wielders in the shower.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMaybe he thought you were a bug,\u201d Roxas teased. He pinched Lea\u2019s bare forearm hard enough to make him jump. \u201cTo eat!\u201d <\/p>\n
\u201cAmbitious of him.\u201d Lea tapped the cup on the porch railing, and the spider reluctantly shuffled onto more stable ground. \u201cThere, eat anything out here that you want, you can be the porch bouncer.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOk, that one\u2019s fake!\u201d Roxas called out Lea, watching curiously as the spider scuttled along the underside of the railing and then back up again. \u201cSpiders don\u2019t bounce, for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, a bouncer, a\u2014\u201d Lea rolled his eyes skyward. \u201cNever mind, geez. That\u2019s enough bug time for me! Get out of my way so I can finally take my shower and we can go on this mission already. You and Ven can sit out here and sniff the city or whatever it is kids are into these days.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will, thanks!\u201d Roxas retorted, staying right where he was and forcing Lea to squeeze-shuffle past him in the doorway. \u201cHey, where are we going anyway?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSomewhere called Ant Island,\u201d Ventus reported. He frowned. \u201cDo you think they have spiders there?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m sure it\u2019s fine.\u201d Roxas shrugged.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, come on!\u201d Lea\u2019s voice echoed out from the bathroom. \u201cWho let you in here?!\u201d<\/p>\n
